In American culture we do not so much test our theories as prosecute our cases, seeking supportive evidence and ignoring data that do not fit—a failing known as confirmation bias. Then accuse opponents of doing the same thing. This is what makes debates over nature and nurture, dietary fat, abortion, healthcare, education, racism, gay marriage and global warning, er (climate change) so polarized.
